Low Vision

Picture
Low vision means having impaired vision that is uncorrectable, meaning it cannot be corrected by glasses, surgery or medication. It does not mean vision when not wearing glasses.

In the United States, any person with vision that cannot be corrected to better than 20/200 in the best eye, or who has 20 degrees or less of visual field remaining, is considered legally blind.

Some of the most common causes of Low Vision are:
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Retinal Detachment

Some Optometrists specialize in Low vision rehabilitation, which can help to enhance your remaining visual function and improve your quality of life. People with low vision can learn a variety of techniques to help them perform daily activities with their remaining vision. Government and private programs offer educational and vocational counseling, occupational therapy, rehabilitation training and more. We work closely with low vision specialists in the area to get you the resources you need.
