blepharitis

Picture
Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids. It is common condition that is chronic but is not contagious. It is usually caused by either bacteria or a skin condition, such as dandruff of the scalp or rosacea. Poor facial hygiene can also be a contributing factor.
Symptoms of Blepharitis include:
  • Blurry Vision
  • Stinging/itching
  • Tearing
  • Red Swollen Eyes
  • Crusty Eyelashes
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Increased Blinking

There are two main types of blepharitis:
Anterior blepharitis is commonly caused by bacteria (staphylococcal blepharitis) or dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows (seborrheic blepharitis). These bacteria are commonly found on the face and lids, but if they become excessive, or the lid area reacts poorly to their presence, an infection may occur. Less commonly, allergies or a mite infestation of the eyelashes can cause anterior blepharitis.

Posterior blepharitis can occur when the meibomian glands of the eyelids irregularly produce oil (meibomian blepharitis). This creates a favorable environment for bacterial growth. Posterior blepharitis can also develop as a result of other skin conditions, such as rosacea and scalp dandruff.

Treatment for Blepharitis includes warm compresses, lid scrubs and artificial tears. In more moderate to severe cases, you may be prescribed antibiotic and/or steroid eye drops. It is important to remember that blepharitis is a chronic condition that require routine eyelid hygiene to prevent flare ups, just like you brush your teeth to avoid cavities. In office Microblepharoexfoliation treatments and/or meibomian gland expression, usually performed twice a year, can help provide lasting relief from symptoms.
